Castellon tourist information
Castellón extends on a flat ground between the mountains and the sea. It is the capital of the second most mountainous province in the peninsula and is bathed by the Mediterranean. It's located on the 0 meridian, also called Greenwich, with the geographical diversity as its greatest attraction, which grows as we focus our sight on exact points. The city is experiencing an expansion process. It faces the sea and the new horizons provided by culture, which has always been, and is more and more established in its streets. Its unique landscapes and the white orange blossoms, which become oranges in autumn, turn this town into an indispensable stop to get to know the splendorous Valencian littoral.
The products of the region are the base of a gastronomy that mixes the international, the traditional and the regional kitchens. Rice is the main raw material and is the base of lots of specialities of Castellon's kitchen, such as the paella, the arrós amb fesols i nap (rice with beans and turnip) and the arroz a banda (rice cooked in fish broth), arroz al horno (baked rice) or the arroz con calabaza (rice with pumpkin). However, the sea products also have a special position in the culinary offer, which ranges from the most select seafood to the fried dishes of the most tasty products of the Mediterranean with the suquet de peix (special cooked mixed fish) as the most important dish.
More than 10 km separate Castellon from Benicàssim: an unending beach known as Serradal beach to the north and Gurugú where it reaches the port.
This beach of fine, golden sand is bordered by a pleasant promenade and has full facilities. An aerodrome offering flying or parachuting courses plus a golf course in a nearby district are just some possible activities.
In addition to its bustling industrial activity thanks to the thriving tile trade, the port also houses the premises of a lively sailing club which organises major sailing regattas. A dinghy sailing school and a diving club, together with the modern Planetarium situated nearby, complete the leisure and sport facilities.
The city itself with its rich heritage of monuments, churches and museums, provides a cultural outlook.
